AC Filter Guide for Laredo Homes

The air filter is the cheapest part of your cooling system and one of the most consequential. This guide covers sizes, ratings, replacement timing and the mistakes that quietly cost cooling capacity.

A filter has two jobs: protect the equipment from dust that would foul the coil and blower, and improve the air you breathe. Those goals can pull against each other, because higher filtration usually means more resistance to airflow.

Getting the balance right matters more in a hot climate, where the system runs many hours and any restriction shows up as reduced capacity during peak heat.

Reading filter sizes

Filter sizes are printed on the cardboard frame as nominal dimensions — for example 16x25x1 or 20x25x4. Nominal sizes are rounded; the actual filter is slightly smaller so it slides into the track.

Write your size down or photograph the frame. Buying the wrong size is the most common filter mistake, and forcing a near-fit leaves gaps where unfiltered air bypasses the filter completely.

  • The first two numbers are height and width; the third is thickness.
  • One-inch filters are the most common in older systems; four- and five-inch media filters hold far more dust.
  • The arrow on the frame shows airflow direction — it should point toward the blower.
  • A filter that fits loosely allows bypass, which defeats the purpose even when the filter itself is new.

What MERV means, practically

Higher is not automatically better. Installing a high-resistance filter in a system with marginal duct capacity reduces airflow, which lowers cooling capacity and increases the chance of coil icing. If you want better filtration, the reliable path is more filter surface area — a thicker media filter or a larger filter cabinet — not simply a higher number in the same one-inch slot.

How often to change filters here

Replace based on appearance, not the box's suggested interval. During heavy cooling months a one-inch filter can load in four to six weeks; in dusty corridors or homes with multiple pets, sooner. Thicker media filters typically go several months.

A simple habit: check the filter on the first of every month during cooling season. If light no longer passes through easily or the surface is matted with dust, replace it.

How a restricted filter affects cooling

Reduced airflow across the evaporator coil lowers the amount of heat the system can remove, so cooling output falls even though the equipment is running normally. As airflow drops further, coil temperature falls and moisture on the coil can freeze.

Once ice forms, airflow drops more and the cycle compounds — often ending with a system that blows almost nothing and a puddle of water when the ice melts. That entire sequence starts with a filter nobody checked.

Filter mistakes worth avoiding

  • Leaving the old filter in place when installing the new one — it happens more than you would think.
  • Assuming a clean filter means clean coils; if dust bypassed earlier, the coil may still need attention.
  • Running the system without a filter at all, which sends dust directly onto the coil and blower.

Can a dirty filter stop an AC from cooling?
Yes. Heavy restriction reduces airflow across the evaporator coil, which lowers cooling capacity and can drop coil temperature enough to form ice. Once the coil ices, airflow nearly stops and the system delivers almost no cooling. Replacing the filter and allowing any ice to thaw completely often restores normal operation.
What MERV rating should I use?
For most residential systems, the mid range — roughly MERV 8 to 11 — balances filtration and airflow reasonably well. If air quality is a priority, get more filter surface area rather than a higher rating in the same one-inch slot. A thicker media filter provides better filtration with less resistance than a high-MERV one-inch filter.
Are washable filters a good idea?
They reduce waste but generally capture less than good pleated media, and they must be dried completely before reinstalling. A damp filter in a humid climate is an invitation for growth. Mini splits are the exception — their washable screens are part of the design and should be rinsed regularly.
Where is my filter located?
Common locations are a slot at the indoor air handler or furnace, a filter grille in a hallway or ceiling return, or a dedicated filter cabinet next to the equipment. Some homes have more than one. If you cannot find it, note that during a service visit and ask to be shown — knowing the location and size is worth the question.
Does a new filter improve airflow immediately?
If the old one was restricted, yes — the improvement is often noticeable right away. If airflow is still weak with a fresh, correctly sized filter, something else is limiting it: a fouled coil, duct restriction, a blower issue or inadequate return capacity. That is the point to have airflow measured rather than trying different filters.
